Pond Aeration

Aeration is important for all life in a pond. Fish, plants and beneficial bacteria all need oxygen and in an artificial environment like a backyard pond oxygen must be added. Pond aeration is supplied by a pump that moves water throughout the pond and provides circulation. Aeration is improved even more when the water surface is broken by means of a waterfall or fountain.

Pumps should run 24 hours a day 7 days a week to ensure that aeration is maintained. As plants consume oxygen at night, aeration is more important during the night time hours. If you wake in the morning to find your fish gasping at the surface they're not looking for food , they're after oxygen so keep your pumps on at night.

If you have high levels of fish or any number of Koi we recommend higher levels of aeration. This can be achieved by a second pump or by air stones using an aeration pump such as the Oase Aqua Oxy.
